5/13/2009 The Day after TomorrowBecause people are trying to survive, creativity flourishes. In places such as Dharavi one of the world’s largest slums, housing and countless tiny business mingle, enterprising spirit is in the air. This place is high-density, carfree, walkable and mixed use. It’s organic in urban forms and has strong social coherence and community network. For years in the past, we aimed to clear them all, but it has suddenly occurred to us that these appear to exhibit many good qualities that we’ve been looking for and trying to restore in our modern urban life.
However, as Rebecca Tuhus-Dubrow put it, acknowledging the values of these poverty-stricken shantytowns risks glorifying it, romanticizing or rationalizing it. Dharavi may be ecologically friendly given its extremely low energy consumption per capita, but it is not the residents’ choice and it is their welfare that suffers and pays for the price of poverty and deprivation. In cases like this, what is good for the earth is not good for the people. 10 billion people currently live in slums like Dharavi in Mumbai or Kibera in Nairobi, and the number is likely to double by 2030. With more people live in urban areas now than ever before, the challenge could be mammoth. Demolition, relocation and start from the scratch is argueably a more cost-efficient option in economic terms, but disruption and trauma caused to the community may imply high social cost.
